Just moments after it leaked on social media, Rockstar Games has officially revealed the trailer for Grand Theft Auto VI.
The highly anticipated trailer surpassed 32 million views within its first few hours on Youtube.
The original plan was to release the trailer on Tuesday, December 5 at 9 am PST. However, Rockstar Games announced on X, previously known as Twitter, that due to a leak, they urged viewers to watch the official trailer on YouTube.
GTA 6, the next chapter of the action-adventure franchise, has been a long time coming. GTA 5 was released in 2013.
The trailer confirms, too, that it's set in Vice City with a large sign - not a huge surprise for those who've been following the series, but exciting nonethelessAlongside numerous rapid scenes depicting criminal activities, there are also brief glimpses of TikToks and live-streams, suggesting that social media will play a significant role in this installment.
It all takes place as Tom Petty's "Love Is a Long Road" plays in the background, appropriate for the many car-related crimes we see. And yes, true to the Florida setting, there are alligators in locations where they shouldn't be.
It ends by showing us a little more of Lucia and a male character, seemingly both lovers and partners-in-crime. "The only way we're gonna get through this is by sticking together and being a team," Lucia says at one point.
The teaser for the game came in more than a decade after the launch of its predecessor and will coincide with the 25th anniversary of Rockstar Games.
Several analysts have predicted the new title would be an instant hit with billions of dollars in sales each year.
A hack last year released dozens of development videos of "GTA VI", showing footages of robberies, gunplay and open-world driving in what was one of the biggest gaming leaks.
To say Grand Theft Auto VI is hotly anticipated is an understatement. Rockstar's last car larceny game dropped more than 10 years ago, and despite a circus of speculation and some leaks in 2022, fans have seen almost nothing official from the franchise.
Alongside the initial in-game action showcase, the premiere video for Grand Theft Auto 6 also reveals the game's anticipated release year: 2025. Take-Two Interactive, the publisher, has officially announced that GTA 6 is set to debut on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. However, the availability of a PC version has not yet been confirmed.
GTA 6 marks a significant milestone as it will be the inaugural GTA installment released by Sam Houser without the involvement of his brother and Rockstar co-founder, Dan Houser. Dan, who frequently penned the scripts for Rockstar games and played a pivotal role in their production, holds a writing credit on every GTA game dating back to 1999's GTA: London 1969 and GTA 2. His departure from Rockstar in March 2020 adds an extra layer of anticipation to the release of GTA 6.
