How We Celebrated Our Wedding On A Budget - A Guide To Cut Your Wedding Cost

Wedding On A Budget, Cut Wedding Cost, Wedding Planning, Tips for saving money on wedding costs, Wedding Budget

A wedding is a beautiful fairytale that comes with a price tag!

Diamond rings, flowing white dresses, endless canapés – weddings, the picture of pure joy, right? Until you see the bill!

It all started with a dreamy Pinterest board and a fiancé overflowing with enthusiasm (and slightly unrealistic expectations). We envisioned fairy lights in a rustic barn, a cascading floral arch, and a gourmet food truck serving miniature lobster rolls.

BUT…

Somewhere between the mason jar centerpieces and the DJ's hourly rate, reality hit harder than a bouquet to the face. The "average" $30,000 price tag suddenly felt like a mischievous gremlin multiplying numbers on our spreadsheet.

Even though with such a huge amount, our wedding ended up costing half the national average. Yes, half!

We learned that the key wasn't about cutting corners, but prioritizing what mattered. So, dear soon-to-be-wedded friends, take it from a budgeting battle-scarred veteran: don't let the cost cast a shadow on your special day.

In this article, I am going to share our budget wedding day memories, how we planned our wedding on a tight budget, secret tips, and tricks we followed. Stay tuned!

Importance of Saving Money on Your Wedding

Don't let your dream wedding turn into a financial nightmare! While love is priceless, the price tag often isn't. Keep in mind, that the most beautiful moments aren't bought, they're built on shared laughter and genuine connection. So ditch the pressure, prioritize what matters, and get creative! You're happily ever after shouldn't come with a side of financial woes.

Financial benefits:

  • Start married debt-free: Avoid starting your life together burdened by wedding loans.
  • Invest in your future: Use saved funds for a down payment, dream vacation, or other shared goals.
  • Reduce stress: Knowing you're not overspending brings peace of mind.

Wedding benefits:

  • Focus on what matters: Prioritize experiences and elements that truly resonate with you.
  • Get creative: Think outside the box and personalize your celebration with DIY touches.
  • More memorable moments: Spend less on material things and more on creating lasting memories.

If you have no ideas, according to the study done by The Knot, the average wedding cost in the US in 2023 was $34,165. This number includes everything from the ceremony and reception to attire, photography, and honeymoon.

Set a Realistic Budget

Before you get swept away by Pinterest boards and swoon-worthy gowns, let me tell you a little secret: your wedding budget is your best friend, not your foe. Don't wait until the dream venue or caterer throws a price tag like a dragon throws fire – set a budget first.

It's like having a map for your financial journey. You know where you're starting, where you want to be, and how much you can spend to get there. No more panicking when your dream dress turns out to be a financial burden.

So, before you dive headfirst into wedding planning, grab your partner, a cup of coffee, and set a budget together. It's the first step to creating a wedding that's as beautiful and unique as your love, without the financial stress.

Trust me, your future selves will thank you for it!

Tips on How to Determine a Realistic Wedding Budget

Your wedding should reflect your love, not your finances. Focus on what matters to you and your partner. Communicate openly and honestly about budget concerns with your partner. Be flexible and creative to create a beautiful, meaningful wedding! Here are some tips to determine your wedding budget:

1. Be honest with yourselves:

  • Track your income and expenses: Look at your bank statements for the past few months. What comes in? What goes out? Where can you cut back?
  • Discuss your priorities: Talk openly about what's most important to you both. Is it a killer DJ, a delicious cake, or a dreamy honeymoon?
  • Acknowledge your expectations: Be realistic about what things cost. Don't rely on Pinterest dreams; research real-world prices.

2. Crunch the numbers:

  • Gather financial information: Consider your savings, any contributions from family, and potential loan options (remember, debt can be a burden).
  • Use budgeting tools: Many online resources and apps can help you create and track your budget.
  • Start with a ballpark figure: Look at average wedding costs in your area, then adjust based on your priorities and financial situation.

3. Prioritize and allocate:

  • The 50/30/20 rule: Allocate 50% to essential expenses (venue, catering, attire), 30% to "nice-to-haves" (decor, entertainment), and 20% to buffer for unexpected costs.
  • Categorize and track: Divide your budget into categories like food, flowers, photography, and transportation. Track your spending in each category religiously.
  • Be flexible: Know where you can compromise and where you won't budge. Be open to creative alternatives and DIY projects.

4. Embrace the power of "no":

  • Resist the pressure: Don't feel obligated to follow every trend or please everyone. Stick to your budget and priorities.
  • Compare and negotiate: Get quotes from different vendors and negotiate prices if possible. Don't be afraid to walk away if something doesn't fit your budget.
  • Be mindful of hidden costs: Factor in taxes, gratuities, delivery fees, and other hidden expenses.

Average Wedding Cost

The average cost is just that – an average. While it can serve as a starting point, it's crucial to remember that it's just an average, and your actual cost can swing wildly depending on several factors:

  • Location, Location, Location: Let's face it, a beach wedding in Hawaii will carry a different price tag than a backyard ceremony in Kansas. Major cities generally come with higher costs for everything from venues to vendors. So, before you get swept away by that charming coastal venue, factor in its location impact on your budget.

  • Guest Count: This one's pretty straightforward – more guests equal more expenses. From catering and seating to invitations and favors, every aspect scales with your guest list. Consider an intimate ceremony or strategic guest list trimming if budget is a concern.

  • Venue Dreams: Rustic barn, elegant ballroom, or trendy restaurant rooftop? Your venue choice significantly impacts your budget. Remember, the venue fee often includes things like tables, chairs, and sometimes even staff. Compare options carefully and consider off-peak days or less traditional venues for potential cost savings.

  • Vendor Variations: Photographers, caterers, DJs – the vendor world is vast and varied. Their prices can differ greatly based on experience, location, and even package options. Get quotes from multiple vendors, compare their offerings, and don't be afraid to negotiate or get creative with DIY elements.

  • Prioritization is Key: Not everything on your dream list has to be top-tier. Decide what truly matters to you and allocate your budget accordingly. A killer dance floor and amazing food might trump elaborate centerpieces or a fancy cake. It's your day, personalize it based on your priorities!

How We Cut Our Wedding Cost

Okay, lovebirds, gather 'round! Let me tell you about the magical day I married my partner-in-crime without turning into a budget casualty. Let's face it, the "average" wedding cost can make your eyes water faster than a rogue onion at the ceremony.

But here's the thing: our celebration overflowed with love, laughter, and zero debt, thanks to some key areas where we slashed the budget like ninjas.

01. Venue

Our grand ballroom dream transformed into a magical backyard wedding, saving us money on venue costs and incorporating fairy lights for instant fairytale vibes.

It was stunning, affordable, and came with natural décor (hello, free flowers!). Bonus points for the off-season date – cheaper and less crowded! You can consider non-traditional options like parks, gardens, or restaurants. Opt for off-season dates or weekdays.

02. Guest List

We had to be ruthless darlings. Prioritizing close family and friends was tough, but we offered tiered invitations (ceremony or reception only) and utilized online RSVPs to manage numbers.

Trust me, every guest saved is a chunk of cash saved! Every guest means more food, seating, and invitations – trim wisely! So be strategic and prioritize only the close ones and offer tiered invitations or online RSVPs.

03. Attire

Who needs designer labels, anyway? My dress was a second-hand gem from a vintage store, and my partner rented his tuxedo. We looked sharp, saved a fortune, and felt good about sustainable choices. Skip the designer price tag!

Check out sample local sales, browse second-hand stores, or consider renting tuxedoes.  Go for simpler styles or off-the-rack options.

04. Food & Drinks

Ditch the stuffy, overpriced banquet food! We went for a food truck fiesta, with delicious options and a fun, casual vibe. For drinks, we offered a signature cocktail and an open bar with limited options. Remember, happy guests don't need endless champagne fountains!

Explore catering alternatives like family-style meals, food trucks, or potlucks. Opt for open bars with limited options or signature cocktails. Remember, delicious doesn't have to mean expensive!

05. Flowers & Decor

We unleashed our inner artists! Mason jars, greenery, and DIY centerpieces with fairy lights created a romantic rustic ambiance. Seasonal flowers added pops of color without breaking the bank.

Remember, creativity trumps expensive arrangements. Less is often more when it comes to decor!

06. Photography & Videography

We didn't need full-day coverage. A talented friend with a good eye captured the key moments, and a shorter package from a less experienced professional fit our budget perfectly. Remember, the memories, not the price tag, last a lifetime!

Don't overshoot your budget!  Book less experienced professionals, or explore alternatives like hiring friends with good photography skills.

07. Stationery & Invitations

We skipped the fancy calligraphy and went DIY digital. Online tools and templates helped us design beautiful invitations, and we saved by ditching unnecessary extras like envelope liners. Less is more, even for invites!

Design and print your own invitations using online tools like Canva or affordable templates. Skip unnecessary extras like envelope liners.

There you have it, lovebirds! Our wedding was a testament to love, laughter, and smart budgeting. These are just ideas to get you started. Find what works for you, prioritize what matters, and don't let the price tag steal your happily ever after! Your love story deserves a beautiful celebration, not a financial burden.

Additional Money-Saving Tips on Your Wedding

01. Get Creative and DIY

Remember our backyard wedding ceremony? Well, guess what? We didn't hire a fancy florist for all the decor! Instead, we enlisted the help of my Aunt Martha, a gardening wiz, who helped us create gorgeous centerpieces with mason jars, wildflowers, and greenery we foraged ourselves.

We even DIY-ed our wedding programs with cute illustrations and heartfelt poems. I also want to say thank you to my dear cousin John, who helped us to come up with an adorable wedding program with our love story illustrated.  DIY doesn't mean scrappy! It was personal, budget-friendly, and added a special touch to our celebration.

02. Shop Smart

My "something new" wasn't a designer dress, it was a pre-loved gem. My dress might have been pre-loved, but let me tell you, it was a steal! I grabbed it from a local vintage clothing store.

My partner, the ever-so-stylish groom, scored an amazing tuxedo rental deal during an off-season sale. Remember, a little patience and price comparison can go a long way! And you must be well prepared and have a proper wedding plan handy with you in order to purchase things at the right time with great discounts!

03. Be Flexible

We originally envisioned a grand reception in a hotel ballroom. But then, inspiration struck! We considered a beautiful backyard wedding at my parents' house, and the more we thought about it, the more we loved it.

It was intimate, meaningful, and saved us a ton on venue costs. Plus, we got to decorate with fairy lights strung between the trees – talk about magical!

04. Seek Out Free Resources

We were lucky to have my parents' stunning backyard for the ceremony, but public parks, community centers, or even beaches can be amazing (and free!) ceremony locations. Get creative and think outside the box! Remember, sometimes the most beautiful things are free!

A Throwback to My Closed Friend Sarah’s Wedding Day

Sarah and Alex, a young couple passionate about travel, dreamt of a destination wedding but knew traditional costs were out of reach. They prioritized experiences over extravagance and opted for an intimate ceremony on a secluded beach in Thailand.

By skipping a venue and using local vendors, they saved significantly. Sarah, a talented baker, made their cake, and Alex, a musician, provided the ceremony music. They found beautiful, affordable attire online and decorated with DIY elements like seashells and lanterns.

Their honeymoon became part of the celebration, saving them an additional expense. They documented the day with a GoPro camera instead of a professional photographer, capturing candid moments that felt more authentic. In the end, their wedding was an unforgettable adventure that reflected their personalities and love for travel, all while staying within their budget.

Remember, this is just a fictional example. Real-life couples will have different circumstances and creative solutions. The key takeaway is that with open minds, resourcefulness, and a focus on what truly matters, you can have a beautiful and meaningful wedding without spending a fortune.

Conclusion

So, there you have it! My wedding wasn't just a celebration of love, it was a testament to the power of creativity, smart shopping, and embracing alternative options. We managed to cut costs even further without sacrificing the magic of our wedding day. By leveraging those smart tips and tricks, you can also have a magical yet affordable celebration like ours which reflects love and fits your financial reality.
