INGREDIENTS

(Makes 6-8 pancakes):

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk (or regular milk with 1 teaspoon lemon juice)
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter (plus extra for cooking)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
  • Red or pink food coloring (optional, for a Valentine’s touch)
  • Cooking spray or extra butter for the pan

Tools:

  • Heart-shaped pancake mold or cookie cutter (or freehand it with a squeeze bottle!)

RECIPE INSTRUCTIONS

1. Prepare the Batter:

  • In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  • In another bowl, mix the buttermilk, milk, egg, melted butter, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  • Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, stirring until just combined. Avoid overmixing—it’s okay if there are a few lumps.
  • Add a few drops of red or pink food coloring if desired, and mix until you achieve your preferred shade.

2. Heat the Pan:

  • Preheat a non-stick skillet or griddle over medium heat. Lightly grease with butter or cooking spray.

3. Shape the Pancakes:

  • If using a heart-shaped mold, place it on the skillet and pour about 1/4 cup of batter into the mold. Spread it evenly.
  • If you don’t have a mold, use a squeeze bottle to carefully draw a heart shape with the batter.
  • Cook for 2-3 minutes, or until bubbles form on the surface and the edges look set.

4. Flip and Cook:

  • Carefully remove the mold (if using) and flip the pancake with a spatula.
  • Cook for another 1-2 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through.
  • Repeat with the remaining batter, regreasing the pan as needed.

5. Serve with Love:

  • Stack your heart-shaped pancakes on a plate, drizzle with maple syrup, and add toppings like fresh berries, whipped cream, or a dusting of powdered sugar.
  • Serve warm and enjoy!

Pro Tips:

  • For extra flair, add chocolate chips, sprinkles, or a dollop of Nutella to the batter.
  • Pair with a side of crispy bacon or a mimosa for a complete breakfast in bed.
  • These heart-shaped pancakes are not just delicious—they’re a heartfelt way to show someone you care.
