Helpful Tips & Easy Variations

Strawberries:

Fresh strawberries give the best flavor, color, and texture, especially if you muddle them slightly before mixing. If you’re out of fresh ones, thawed frozen strawberries work well too—just be sure to drain any excess water so it doesn’t dilute the drink. Freeze-dried strawberries are another handy option; they add a stronger strawberry flavor and a fun texture if you toss them in whole.

Juice:

White Cran-Strawberry juice is the secret to nailing the classic flavor. If that’s not available, Cran-Raspberry or even a Cran-Apple-Strawberry blend can still taste great. You can also experiment with a homemade mix using white grape juice and a splash of fresh strawberry puree.

Milk Options:

Sweetened vanilla coconut milk keeps the drink creamy and dairy-free with just the right touch of sweetness. For a richer version, use canned coconut milk—just remember to shake it well to mix the fat. Coconut cream creates an ultra-creamy texture, ideal for dessert-style drinks.

Reader-tested alternatives include:

  • Vanilla almond milk for a nutty, subtle twist

  • Vanilla oat milk for a smooth and slightly thicker finish

  • Coconut almond vanilla creamer for extra sweetness and flavor

Want it sweeter?

Customize the sweetness to your liking! A splash of simple syrup (or honey/agave for a natural option) blends in easily. Another method is to toss your sliced strawberries with a bit of sugar and let them sit for 5–10 minutes to release their juices—this "maceration" step gives a natural syrupy sweetness that enhances the drink.

Want it extra fruity?

Add a splash of unsweetened passionfruit or mango juice to amp up the tropical notes. Some fans even mix in a little strawberry-flavored sparkling water for a fizzy twist.
